Proton Pump Inhibitors – IMPORTANT UPDATE
There have been several news stories in recent weeks regarding the side effects of Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) medications. This includes Esomeprazole (Nexium), Pantoprazole (Somac), Rabeprazole (Pariet) and Lansoprazole (Zoton) amongst others.
PPIs are a very effective treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s oesophagus, stomach ulcers and other gastro-intestinal conditions.
Like most medications, there are some potential side effects. In appropriately prescribed doses for short periods the risk of serious side effects is low. Long term use of PPIs is best managed by your specialist and regular review of your symptoms and medications is important.
It is important that you do not just stop taking your PPI medication in response to reports in the media. If you have had a change in your symptoms or have concerns about taking PPIs, please contact us to organise an appointment to speak with A/Prof Pavey.
